B and the B

by Philip F De Pinto

I know beauty
When I see it
Walking toward
Or away from me
Have know it even
When it was standing still
For the few times
That it stood still for me
Or merely idling to catch its breath
For the many in dogged pursuit
Who not trusting beauty from without
Would with their trusty knives see to her innards
To see if she held equal beauty within

I have encountered
Such beauty
On the roadside
When she was so defiled
And breathing her last
And have had to
Reinsert all the beautiful stuffing
And with thread and needle sew and
Stitch and nurse her back to hale

Dare I say
I have known beauty when
She has stood still
Enough to have me clasp her hand
Which was untold wealth
To hold
And dare I say
She did not flinch
Or rebuff the paw
Which I presented her

Dare I say
I've walked hand
In hand with such beauty
Dared clasp her hand
In a land where hand
Holding was strictly forbidden
A faux pas
For which beauty and I were savagely beaten and tried
Found guilty and incarcerated
And put in adjacent cells
The bars through which we were permitted
To hold hands
Given there is no law
In this land
Which forbids
The holding of hands in jail

Needles to say
We are still incarcerated
Beauty and I
Hands still committing the most atrocious
Faux pas
Still refused parole
Which disturbs us not the least
Given their jail is the only place
Which bids us the liberty
Of such which delights us no end

made me think of marriage possibly as a self imposed and enjoyable but society imposed bind, such an original write and layered, deep, profound even, beautifully crafted. "it stood still for me Or merely idling to catch its breath For the many in dogged pursuit" These lines really stood out for me.
