Unthinkable Demise

by Alison McKenzie

The reign of tears
Must lead to an ocean -
That vast underland
Of creatures never connected
To stock markets
Or industry.

Their world we waste -
Incomprehensible acts of
Criminal negligence
And irresponsibilities -
That they would become our victims -
The perpetuation of our greed
To their demise.

We wear our arrogance
With no remorse
Behind innocent, painted skins.

We take what is no one's,
What is everyone's.

Oh, but we plant trees
And pray for reclamation.

The creatures
Beach themselves, dead or dying
While we, heroic,
Throw them back into the poison.

It must just be too sophomoric
To imagine we can care for them
When we cannot even
Find the value
In our neighbor's smile,
Or their children's laughter.

Author's Note: I could write a million poems lamenting the unforgivable actions humans perpetrate at unforgivable cost to other creatures who rely on earth with us.
