In View of Mortality

by Joe Cramer

Your invincibility
was worn down by time
the years creeping by
as you slowed down,
really slowed down
from a run, to walk,
a walk to a crawl

and then it begins, that's all
that's left of your life.

Leaving now a grown child and a wife
and a whole lot of other family
including me.

I didn't see you
for several years.
I am saddened by the loss
holding back tears
while still overwhelmed
by all of my fears
of what will happen to me.

This is just the way life happens to be.

You really get to the heart of aging and loss here. "and then it begins, that's all that's left of your life. " - I like how this uses the word "begins" even as your uncle's life is ending. Thanks for this, Joe. I'm very sorry for your loss.
