Suddenly It's September

by Steven Craig

Suddenly, its September.

It crept up like a quiet spider

Like a tide in a clogged drain

Like a sudden wind

Still, it did not chase the heat

Or make the earth shake

Or even matter much to the crickets

But suddenly its September

The fall webs have appeared between the bushes

The first yellow leaves festoon the fescue

The wasps are now in full hunter gatherer mode

The Koi are poking about the deeper ponds

Suddenly, it is September

The tomatoes now their time is short

The roses will flourish one last blush

The north Canadian clouds will begin to roll

Knowing full well without another sign

Its suddenly.... September.

I keep hoping for something to take the crickets - they have been relentless at night here. I can only be thankful they are not cicadas. I like your observations here and am seeing many of the same things in this neck of the woods.
