Where Eagles Dare

by Chris Sorrenti

so here you fly
the dizzying heights
of accomplishment
where only the bravest eagles
dare to wing

is it what you expected?
sum of all its parts -
years of toil and fret
worth the effort?

at this altitude - yes
hard to stay aloft
for how quickly
the wind of destiny changes
pushing you in all directions

atmosphere - thin of oxygen
easily causing delusion -
the gift in all its majesty
allowing surveillance
of mere mortals below
and in this - the curse
of that special loneliness

not to worry
others will be along soon
seeking their slice
of glory and distinction
as you did
unafraid to compete
knock you out of the sky
for as all birds
eagles are territorial

are you ready for them?
prepared to defend
that title
of highest flyer?

We are all at the whim of nature's causative interplay.
