August the Fourth

by Chris Sorrenti

August the fourth
I knew not your course
For the gamble of gambles
Was made so innocently
In that summer of seventy-three

Airwaves thundered with Smoke On The Water
TV flashing with Kung Fu fighters
To put them together grows increasingly harder
Yet back then
It was easy as riding a bike

August the fourth
For you I will never be sore
As in your warmth
My heart acted so childishly
Without regret

School was a universe away
Playing softball all day
The coke was cold and the girls were hot
But I didn’t think of it then
Who does when they’re young
And in love?

August the fourth
I knew not your course
Now I do and I love you
