N. Reflections

by Christel Crews

I stood there
staring at a face with which I have a love/hate relationship with
No mirrors are needed for
I know every flaw, every contour
every wrinkle that is just beginning
to whisper signs of reality: 31 years of stress isn't always easy

I stood there
and realized the face looking back at me
was no longer recognizable
"Who was she?"
I asked myself.
The emptiness peering back at me into the looking glass
Balanced the hollow heart inside

I stood there
and with a blink
I saw a shadow that wasn't there before
a familiar but distant shape
Turning behind me, the room was empty
"Puzzling"
I thought as I turned back to try to focus
"Who is she"
I asked myself yet again
Again, I saw a shadow reflected in the mirror
Paranoia took over as I leaned into the frame
"I know that shape"
"Is it you?"
The curtain rocked gently in the summer breeze
as if to answer my question

I stood there
glaring into a reflection
my own reflection
but staring at the shadow behind me
not recognizable
a Peter Pan moment, if you will
no face, no person
just a glimpse at someone I once knew
"if it is you"
I couldn't believe I was talking to nothing...
in a mirror
"if it is you, I'm so lost.
I don't know who I am anymore
I can't find my way"

I stood there
Staring into the reflective glass
I was alone
the room was empty
the mirror was empty
besides the beach-dyed blonde staring back at me
my heart sank
as I turned to go, disgusted and discouraged
something white caught my eye
A single white daisy lay on the window sill
How it got three stories up, who knows
but

I stood there
staring into the mirror
no longer looking at me
but fixing my eyes on the assurance
that I am not alone
and that no matter what happens
or who I become
in this new season
filled with so many unknowns

I am loved

I love poems with mirrors, so here's a new addition to my favorites. Thanks Christel. I've found them to be supernatural, but in a unique way, how they capture our faces and spritis all throughout our lives. They say that if you put up two mirrors face to face, and then stand between them, you see yourself reflected into infinity, and supposedly spirits are sometimes seen passing somewhere in-between them.
