Dear Diary by Chris Sorrenti
Today
was a good day
a special day
the guys at work took me out for lunch
to East Side Mario’s
in celebration of my retirement
only a week away
Bada Boom Bada Bing
A time
if only brief
to give up on giving up
on the human race
and committing suicide
the note has already been prepared
but it’s only a draft
and you know me Diary
I don’t like sharing drafts
Although of Italian descent
I had the baked salmon and freedom fries
albeit a little dry
not a bone of contention could be found
what can I say?
I was spoiled in childhood
by the family recipe
tomato sauce made from scratch
Over a few drinks
we discussed in detail
all that’s wrong
with the government
particularly Records Management
how the little guy
always gets it in the ass
though we’re the ones
that keep it all running
As a parting gesture
the guys gave me a bottle
of Chianti Classic
14.5% - vintage 2009
of which I happily sip on now
and though the chair and rope
wait for me in the basement
maybe I’ll stick around
for a little while longer
humanity perhaps
still worth something

06/14/2013 Author's Note: In response to some initial feedback, although the thought has occasionally crossed my mind, I have no intention of committing suicide. The opportunity however presented itself to use that thought to add dramatic tension and irony to what might otherwise be a plain diary entry.
