Reliving Billie Holiday

by Chris Sorrenti

it’s not enough just to listen
I want to be there too
moments in time
forever lost
no song can convey

what she actually ate
after recording
Gimmie a Pigfoot (and A Bottle Of Beer)
who reaped the benefit
of that cinnamon voice?
late at night
the microphone gone to sleep

and if she imagined at that moment
of retiring forever
who might still be listening
after all these years

What a gorgeous poem, Chris! She's one of my favorites.

And now I understand why this poem was listed in both "most recently posted" and "top rated" immediately on the homepage. Fantastic, and the accompanying picture is perfect
