arachnophobia

by Peter Humphreys

fleeting memories
of memories past

the Maas flows beneath me
relentlessly
careless
heading north
old towns
on its banks
bell-topped buildings
now surrender
to glass moments
hidden within
reflecting back
itself

increasingly
I find myself
by default
remembering
when harbours
promised more
than present progress
or is it regress

old stones
remember
not long ago
death
destruction
uncompromising
flags bedecked
with that dark spider

my daughter
called it
as she saw it
in old black and white movies
she always hated spiders
that time
she was right

Author's Note: Reflections when crossing the bridge at Maastricht events in the Netherlands, during the period up to and including the 2nd. World War, when many perished to remove that flag.

Interesting poem. I've never thought of a swastika described as a spider, but it works well, whether as a flag or in metaphor.
