For Kip by Mary Ellen SmithThe silver in my hair is worthless
Now that you are gone.
We were going to spend it gradually
With every new day’s dawn.
Spend it on the grandchildren,
On lazy summer days.
Spend it on our children
And autumn’s crimson blaze.
We would have spent some in the winter,
Wrapped cozy arm in arm
And then the spring would sing again
Renewing all your charm.
I’ll not forget your kindness
Or the way you’d tilt your head.
And in my heart I cherish
The sweet nothings that you said.
The silver in my hair now
Reminds how fragile is this life
And I, left with golden memories
The years spent as your wife. 04/20/2013 Author's Note: My Kip, my husband of 27 years went to Heaven a year ago in March. The seasons are a not so gentle reminder of this loss.

You have an effortless rhyme and a lovely knack of story telling, sharing feelings without sappiness. I especially appreciate the take on "the silver in your hair" as a currency totally different than the traditional old age moan. Thanks for this. May your memories of Kip remain strong. |

We would have spent some in the winter,
Wrapped cozy arm in arm
And then the spring would sing again
Renewing all your charm. |
