numb

by Christel Crews

when the clouds roll in
and the thunder rumbles
the wind blows from multiple directions

there is no where to turn
for comfort
because
the one hand you want to hold
is reaching for another's

then the hale rains down
and there is no escape
except to turn within

to find the courage you had
to stand
has been washed away
and
the expectations to be strong
are disappointed

you've failed them all
as
you've failed yourself

as you swallow another shot
and pop one more pill
to find the sensation
that the storm is coming
and you no longer care
because all is

numb

I like how that killer last stanza connects all the dots, and takes the expression and message from the spiritual to the concrete. Well done, Chris.
