Nursery Rhymes ridicule the yellow brick road

by Shannon McEwen

In the faded light of a crescent moon
Next to the jaded cat
And the alcoholic spoon

Waiting for the cow to come home
Instead of dancing with the dish
While the dog chases his bone

and the man in the moon spreads a grin
At the very idea that hearts
Could possibly beat in tin

Before looking into the wishing well
And throwing the last dented copper
Listening to the plink, plink, plink as it fell

The fiddle played the profane
That the wish might actually come true
Which is ever the more insane
