Letter to a Very Old Friend

by Gail Wolper

ยท
Jan!
I can't believe,
after all this time, I found
your address! We share so much
from way way, back.
*
Remember the time
we smoked pot,
listened to the Allman Brothers
and danced.
Remember when
you brought over
the tiny bit of cocaine
we didn't know
was cut with speed.
I ground my teeth
all night
and paced.
I was drunk
and crazy
and still wanted more.
You refused to give me
the code to my life savings.
Thank God or luck
you were there.
Remember how
you fixed me up
with that coke dealer
with the Southern drawl
and cowboy hat
I brought home
a rock, and loved him
for the fact he could no longer
get it up! He bought us
Dom Perignon at the best place-
the one with stuffed game heads
on the walls.
His nostrils were melting
and he had a bad heart.
He took his next plane
out to Texas
and we never heard from
him thank God, or luck.
*
Once we went
to Bennigan's when it
was new. Had so much
pot and stuffed Nachos
and drank screwdrivers
til we threw up. Oh yes,
I fell asleep
under the coffee table.
*
When the Grateful Dead
came to Red Rocks
We entered through
those cliffs.
A scraggly girl
was spinning and then another-
with batiked skirts which flew.
Jerry was fat
and at his best
it was back when they allowed
us to film shows. that night
a kid who had taken acid
jumped off the rocks
and died.
*
We dated two cops
who asked us home
for dinner on the second date.
I liked the blonde Jew you
took the other and
we drank tons of wine
til they took us to their
beds. Later, we laughed
about their small dicks.
*
Remember the guy
who loved to take me
mountain climbing? He
had the blue eyes
brown curly hair and he gave
me a caribiner for a key chain.
I kept that link but
he was too dull and shy.
*
Are you still married
to that great red haired
guy with the smile? Too
bad we lost touch, those
were the days my friend we thought
they'd never end haha.
Take care, Jan,
I love you, bye!

Fun trip down memory lane. Excellent story telling. Kinda reminds me of that song Anchored in Anchorage by Michelle Shocked.
