the writing
on the cardboard wall
arrived
right on time
with the
Dear John letter
but not for me
as my name is Sean
and I have been
minus a girl
for many a year
and minus a wall
for longer
but I don't dare tell
the postman ( lest he go postal! )
that he's made a mistake -
delivered to the
wrong cardboard box
in which I am only
a guest for the night
No!
I'll take
that Dear John
and be glad
to take it
wishing there
were more
which I could always
use for kindling;
something to burn
to keep me warm
on nights
which remind me
I am minus a girl
and walls of any kind
and in the same while
spare a mess o'Johns
heartache
at least for a time
