the other by Philip F De Pinto
the heart
skips a beat
for longer
than a while
little girl
I watched you
skipping rope
on your back porch
hoping to increase
the blood flow
to the brain
which would enable
you to skip grades
and thus put you in the same
class with the other boy
on whom you had such a crush
and so I watched
you little girl
skipping rope and
skipping classes
until you caught up with
the other boy
and in lieu of toting
your books to school
I quietly carried
your torch for you
( you being such a delicate little girl )
and so I watched and watched
while you skipped out and
away from that house
and that back porch
and away from the neighborhood
and completely away from my watch
and I can imagine you now
skipping down the proverbial aisle
with the other boy
who never watched
you on your back porch
skipping rope
or skipping grades
who though he toted
your books will never know
what it's like
to carry your torch
( you being such a delicate little girl )
the weight of which paled
in comparison to the books
