Son Of A Con by Philip F De Pinto
on the subject of another con:
remarks to legendarians
gathered about his wreckage.
legendarians, did you know
that the sun is a convicted felon?
you inquire, how come?
what has the sun done
to achieve con status?
well for one it burned me
more times than one who was not
a sun worshiper has a right not to be.
and two? there is no two, as only one reason is enough
to be down on the sun who put me down for no reason than I was trying
to get chummier? which is no crime in any legendarian's book as far as I know?
and for this burning up and putting me down
the sun was put on trial and for that crime was found guilty by a jury of my peers
headed by my father Dadelous, and as of last night the sun was serving a life sentence
and in solitary confinement no less, and when the sun could no longer tolerate
being on solitary and removed from the glittering population of all the other paroled cons
who had been serving sentences for similar crimes of burning up
and putting down others like myself in other planetary systems than our own
legendarian one and for failing to come through on wishes wished upon them.
and when this con wearied of solitary, guess what he did? what? why it focused real hard on those bars,
reducing them to gray puddles and when it was through with those it began to run across the yard and
began to scale the walls on which it scraped its knuckles and knees and then
in trying to hurdle over the barbed wire, cut its foot which left a trail of hot blood
which is seeming to lead all the way to the sky. the sky, inquire the legendarians? why the sky?
why would the sun go back to the sky? isn't that the first place you would look
for a con? well, it is well known that cons are known to revisit the scene of their crimes, and what do we
have but to play the odds?
and the odds are good that that is where we will find him.
and so now that the con is free, what do you intend doing?
well, there is not much we can do but dispatch these, the usual blood hounds, hot and getting hotter on his trail,
save our hounds, being only quadrupeds and not gifted with light speed
as is this guguped, I fear his recapturing will take considerable time
and as legend has all the time in the legendary world to recapture such a con
we who have never gotten over the put down, nevertheless will
bide our time and take it in our stride.
