Assault On A Peach

by Philip F De Pinto

during such time as one
has a lapse in memory and is
momentarily lost to himself
and is incapable of placing himself
in connection with any species of being
and encountering a bruised peach
on the street inquires of himself ( as one who
is standing upright ) that perhaps he
is the fine and upstanding tree from which
that peach which is fourteen or fifteen feet
within his reach - has fallen?

and what is it particularly about one
who has a lapse in memory and is
momentarily lost to himself and is unable
to place himself in connection with any species
of being and encountering a bruised and half rotten
peach on the street thinks perhaps that he may be
the half rotten assaulter and bruiser of said peach
which lays helplessly on the street fourteen
or fifteen feet within his reach?

and what is it particularly about one
who has a sudden jog of memory who thinks he
may not be that fine and upstanding tree
given he is not rooted and fixed in the earth at all
but may indeed be the half rotten bruiser
who put the heavy beating to that peach in the street
a peach which we will presume is innocent
and did not in the least provoke the beating
a peach which may not be a peach at all
but a half rotten man with a lapse in memory
conflicted as to which species of being he belongs?

and what is it about a half rotten
assaulter of peaches with the sudden change
of heart who feels a desperate need
to make amends at this late hour
and become the good Samaritan who is
not up on his administering CPR
bellowing out into the night - is there
a peach doctor in the house?
