The Masters Of Taking

by Philip F De Pinto

You were the master of taking
On ballast - and I the master of making light of such and taking on
Meaning and shadows with which to cloak
And sneak or escape into Pantomime and back - as well
I had a black belt in catching your drift
And cleaving portions of the suppleness you had taken on
To examine in the scope of our binary function
That the duo might dance and mesh and spin in ways
Which shall through the infinitesimal gauntlets of our uncommon ancestry
Fashion and sustain us through fainting and feverish spells
Through amulets and trinkets to burden and obfuscate our napes and necks and wrists
And through sales so pale as to envy white elephants

No doubt suppleness and meaning shall one day fuse or widen further apart
Yet their armature shall not pass into split infinity or on the opportunity
To cuddle and mingle their uncommon laundry
To spin dry till suppleness and meaning are one
And are enveloped in one ever widening gyre
Heaven knows we've sufficient coinage in our phrase bags
To keep us spinning till we are as dessicated as butts in their ash trays
To smolder and give rise to the griffin
For the mix and mingling - such as will
Heave us into the faith required to take on additional suppleness and meaning
And become their complete master

And no matter how much either weighs us down
And the latter escapes us completely or how thick
Or how heavy you lay your heavy duty trip on me - my meaning will dig
And come to love your every additional ounce
Which I in leaner time would tote threshold over threshold
And when time arrives we decide on a second honeymoon
Such meaning as I have taken on will not find your suppleness
Taxing or burdensome to carry over new thresholds
But to love your every pleat and fold on which I am completely sold
To mesh and to dart and spin through the infinitesimal gauntlets
Of our uncommon certainty - till suppleness and meaning are fused into one
