She Had A Way

by Philip F De Pinto

Of not saying
Nevertheless I had a way
Of understanding what she meant

And when she asked me what was up
I had nothing to report but to say the sky
But not for long as the sky was purchased for a song

By some Alien Corp. to be deflated and reinstalled elsewhere
Most likely on Mars - with the understanding that the birds and the clouds
And the kites and the planes and one Icarus who dabbled in such a sky

Would be thrown in for good measure

And we both had a way
Of turning our backs on the facts
And we both had a way out of sheer innocence to invest in things
We would soon lose interest in and heart

Like faith and love and magic for a start
And then the piece de resistance - you didn't even
Save the last dance for me like you promised you would

And the love which possesses us
Which had a way of not saying
At present possesses some other couple

Nevertheless we ipso facto of turning our backs on the facts
And out of sheer innocence
Had a way of understanding what love meant

Author's Note: lest someone take this ode to heart as some omen, let one reassure that one that the sheer facts are these: that this is an ode and not portent, that the sky still pertains to us, as do the birds and the planes and the kites and that one Icarus as does love which we purchased for a song two millennia ago and to which we will e'er belong.
