Lest You Incinerate

before you burn your bridges
make sure you pay the toll.
you wouldn't want it on your conscience
would you son?
before you burn them all
make certain there isn't a little boy
walking across any with his faithful pup
and his fishing pole
with a holy mackerel in his pail.
before you burn your bridges lad
make sure you permit the guy
who was planning to leap off
to come to his senses.
the one who had a change of heart
who warned you when you were a small fry
not to play with fire
lest you incinerate the best laid plans
of father and son
