toiled like a charm

how many close
brushes with quaint lovers
have you taken on
like potential coats of dark paint
and the multitudinous layers of white rhinoceros days
that would have been yours to carry on board save
for their horned virility were
poached to near extinction
the irony being had the aphrodisiac
toiled like a charm
as was the apothecary's hunch
not a singular one of those brushes
would have been standing one night
but stoking the bucket well past dawn and delight
and perhaps into brunch
