in character by Philip F De Pinto
you don't know who you are
nevertheless you play the part
of a weed whose legs everyone pulls
just for the yank of it
or you play the part of a millipede
who can afford to break as many legs
as the script calls for
when he walks on the stage
or you play the part of an alarm
which doesn't trip though it was set
though it was written in the script
that you do - but you blew your lines to go off
so now the birds that set you to go off early
so they could go off early wont
will not catch their own drift which was an early worm
which you played to squirming perfection early in your career
even though you didn't know who you were then and you don't know now
and still you played that worm the part of which
netted you your only Oscar
who knows but one day you will know who you are
and finally play yourself on stage
and theater goers will stay away in droves
because no one really cares to know who you are
but it is essential you remain in character
sell yourself out so to speak
if you are to perform to sold out audiences
