ode to a retiree

by Philip F De Pinto

it remains to be seen
that the sightless have seen
better than most
what remains of me
is most assuredly not labor free
though I lag and sit in the decrepitude of
what remains of visibility on this bench
designed so a retiree can mull the end of his days
far removed from occupations particularly his own
to mull what a drag it is not to be in the labor parade
to mull death who was never much of a professional
given he works for nothing
yet death will have the Capitalists know
it is laboring for love
still such labor is
giving those who labor for wages a bad name
and here I sit within reasonable
noticing distance to notice that the birds
have not planned well financially and can never retire
or collect their pension
nor can a barbed wire fence
or metallic sign that reads private property stay out
nor can the garbage can a few paces away
still collecting refuse within itself
give up their vocations but go wire to wire with rust
nor can old geezer death ever retire and collect its pension
as has the retiree with a penchant
for noticing the trees still swaying with the breeze
and whispering please please pretty please notice us yea old retiree
given those busy with occupations
never notice us as you do and will
till the end of days
and the clouds yell down hey yea old retiree
would you please please notice us too
we are in life's lexicon too
and the cracks in the ground
and the fissures in the wall
and leaves blown and bandied about at your feet
all want noticing time
as does every retiree
who ever lagged and mulled on a bench
far and away from all occupations
his own included
