Life of an expat

by Amanda Bullington

I'm weaving myself into this history

Thousands of years older than me
Thousands of years older than my country

and no matter where I walk among this earth
I will always come accompanied these stories

of Monkey Kings
and dynasties
of war and peace

I'm weaving myself into this modern reality

of filial piety
reformed Confucianism
and lingering respect for the hierarchy

and no matter where the wind takes me
I will always remember these bows and gestures

I'm leaving a speck of dust on this society
while taking away all the pebbles lining the ocean

digging deep into the soil
each layer an idea traced back to the ancients
carried away from its origin on an expedition

now passed on
to my own future generations

I feel every word of this. I need to get back "out there". Thanks for this.
