JOHN GILBERT RAY III by W. Mahlon PurdinNow here's a good story.
I work with John Gilbert Ray III.
And have come to think
Of him in most friendly terms.
He is always a source of interesting
If unsettling
Ideas and of course conversation.
I missed him after break today,
And asked the foreman,
"Hayden, has John gone home?"
Whereupon on a yonder pile of sails
Appeared two legs, straight up,
And then gangly John getting up
(Sleep still in his eyes)
Rolling down the stack of genoas and mainsails
And walking to his bench
Beside me. I said,
"John, I didn't know you were sleeping."
He just looked at me,
Then resumed his work, stitching a sail. 12/17/1975 Posted on 12/07/2012 Copyright © 2026 W. Mahlon Purdin

| Posted by Kristina Woodhill on 12/07/12 at 11:28 PM John III sounds like a man who gets the most out of his work place. I really liked the description of him rolling down the genoas and mainsails. I would also enjoy hearing some of his stories told by you. |
