Wouldn't Want To Be In Your Shoes

by Chris Sorrenti

Give me an image
that I can focus my hate upon
one that takes no clever script
or special effect
just a newswire photograph
gone viral on the Net
to remind me in my doubt
my madness
that I am still sane
and ever more sane than you

Ah! I know just the thing
take a dead body
drag it behind a motorcycle
any excuse will do
Politics...opportunity
the color of the sun
on Gaza’s sand
at just the right time of day

What happened to attending university
in Cairo?
raising a family
with the woman you fell in love with
at the market
only yesterday

No matter
today is another day
a ‘new day’ as the euphemism goes
what appears on the TV screen
cover of every newspaper
is already a lifetime ago
regardless how primitive you may have been
caught up in the moment
of partisanship
simply following orders
as the Nazis used to say
and we both know what happened to them

I hope

We all seem to have that primitive strain in our blood which given a chance wills its way to the top, takes control and the next minute without thinking your recall what your neighbor said. You rush through his front door and shoot him, his wife, his kids. Few of us are that different even though we pray or hope we are. Don't think for one minute that we are the only civilized or un culture in the world. Really like the write Chris. I always wonder how people can watch the evening news while sipping coffee and eating cake! I for one cried the night I saw the Democratic convention in Chicago and watched as the police "beat the faggot hippies" to the ground. I've come to understand the police when I had the first bullet fired at me.
