dad

by Blair Meeks

it has been three weeks
since you left this world,
dad.

and we never really spoke much
to begin with, although i thought
of you
always.

i look at photographs now –
as a baby
you held me as if I was
as precious as diamonds.

it is hard to say goodbye
to a man that I barely knew

but i will always remember –
tickle monster,
you calling me loggerhead,
purple felt Crown Royal bags
filled with coins,

your smile
and the shape of your eyes,
the blueprint to the face
i see in the mirror.

i don’t know who i am
but i will always see you
looking back.

i love you.

...blair, what sweet rumblings of your Dad...so clear the memories you do have, seemingly (from your words, not that many) but yet and still somewhat good ones. great write.

I see from the date your dad has been gone several months now. My condolences. I'm glad you can focus on the good memories. "your smile and the shape of your eyes the blueprint to the face i see in the mirror." - this is my favorite stanza. Thank you.
