Thanksgiving Dinner

by Kristina Woodhill

over the high woodedhills
each one came,
their works and their quirks
open mics trailing names

full baskets
crammed bags
brimmed drinks
bright toe tags (for imbibers 'til dawn on the lawn on their backs)

they gathered and jostled
in one great big hall
a kitchen, a table, a hook-up for cable
nut crackers for cracking the hard nuts, when able,
they set about making the feast of the fall

the pinto benz simmered
enriching each pot
their thickening agents
bend minding each “not”

potatoes
fresh breads
pies appled
rolls led to sweet blumpots and jelly spoons eager to spread

the north
lent a fellow
who'd flown some odd coop
insisting the menu in this foodie venue include and i'll verbate
his exact demandu
“I must ava a bowl of pathetic blu soup!”

the gravy, the gravy,
who's stirring the gravy?
Mother C., Mae I please
use your bright polished gravy boat ladled with tease?

i'd ordered a bottle of o'neill's best couth
for soaking and cleansing word gobbledee-gooks
it fizzed
it fussed
it foamed
it cussed
restoring our balance of teetering books

our special guest coulter
in jack horner's corner
pulled out her tongue-sharpened knife from its holder
insisted on she, only she, only knew
how to carve brown and white
with her wish bone of true

tables set
rounded sweep
eyes on eyes
all could keep
sight of the first flick of food fight's flung spleep!

it was such a good time
we had such a good chat
for the guests who seem unnamed
be assured you were at this incredible gathering, shared full in our blathering, and all are invited, the ghostly or living,
to the next annual feast of pathetic Thanksgiving!

Such a fun trample through unique phrases and addictive rhythm! Very nice.

This has such an interesting feel to it! The alliteration, the slightly unpredictable rhyme scheme is quite alluring.
