Almost Silenced

by Joe Cramer

Instead of better, it gets worse.
No longer are you around
even the text messages have dwindled

down to nothing
down to nothing.

The angst grows,
and it shows.

I try in so many ways
to be part of your life,
but when it takes three months
for you to get together with me
to give you Christmas presents

that hurts,
it just hurts.

So I go on with my life,
go on living forward
despite the strife

and still call you,
leaving unanswered messages

and futile texts.

I like that this is so direct, raw, un- embellished...it describes what several dads I know are experiencing. Eventually, though, teens grow up and move out from under mothers' direct influence...and things can get better then.

The check isn't in the mail Joe. But I enjoyed the poem.

This a real heart breaker. Don't give up. I'm with Rhiannon - the child or teen will remember you've been determined to stay in touch.
