Exposed & floating

by Jim Benz

there is no lid

the darkness is your lid
just as it's always been
this is good

because you don't have to worry
about suffocating
on your own carbon

dioxide
because you don't experience
that thing

where your breath breathes
back at you
because you're panting

& watching
the intruder from inside
your closet

that is so very small

I've never gotten into 'found' poetry but this is good.

The way this is written took me into the scene and here I am inside this very small enclosed closet, there is no lid, there is only this poem this moment, thank you Jim

The thing about total dark - "lid" is such a perfect term for how I feel when I'm in the total dark and begin my freaky, totally irrational thoughts. How to escape when I'm not even in danger is such a weird notion. The "floating" part makes me think of sensory deprivation in general. The flow is kept tense and moving fast with your word and idea breaks. I'd say this was worth finding.

An eye such as yours (as I imagine it) can find poetry any ol' place... Reminds me that I need to open my eyes and have a good look at & for poetry again, and soon.

I found this
selectively disturbing
having been closeted as a lamb
in child's clothing...

being as claustrophobic as i am, this poem had my chest tightening. i'm always impressed by poetry that has a physical effect on me.

Perhaps the intruder requires some airing?
