Falling Leaves

by Alison McKenzie

I

The fall to ground was heady;
The rest against the Mother’s bosom
Gentle and sleepy.

Soon enough,
The laughing feet
Of booted children
Would send them,
Wooshing and shishing,
Straight into the arms
Of Autumn’s celebration,
Where they would linger
In fallen comas
To wait until
Winter’s pristine blanket
Buried them hidden.

In that song between worlds,
They would bask
Until bidden by Spring’s
Warm breath –
Reborn to Father Tree,
Gaia’s glory,
And every drop of
Rain’s applause.

II

I looked for you
Every October,
‘Neath the pile of leaves
In the backyard.

I listened for you
In every love song’s melody.

I waited for you,
In exclamations and sighs,
On mountain’s ridge,
In pools of valley’s ponds.

I’d catch a whiff
Of the salt air,
The white sands,
The coffee shop
Up the road,
And close my eyes
Lest you burst through
Every door
I ever left open for you.

III

These are strange times
Full of historic merit
That may never make it
To black and white.

The Sun explodes,
Our auras wane;

The rains fall too quickly,
And ocean floors rise.

If I die without your hand,
Let us meet in alternate realms
Where I will gracefully float
Into Autumn’s wind
And love.

This is beautifully crafted and gorgeously designed; the entire flow and layout of the poem leaves nothing to be desired. Not a single word was out of place. Just divine.

Moving capture of personal longing, brought on by the season. Brings back fond memories of childhood when I and my friends would bury ourselves beneath piles of leaves. Back in the day when it was still legal to burn leaves in one's back yard...and the wonderful smell of it! Thanks for the reminder, Ali. Excellent use also of numbered sub-poems to make a whole.
