Highway 401

by Chris Sorrenti

grey ribbon snake;
asphalt skin
undulating beneath;
a familiar mirage
disappearing
before it reaches.
90 to 100
90 again;
in and out
out and in;
a civilian grand prix
measured
in rest stops.

time itself
calibrated
with a cigarette
every revolution
of a short hand
vibrating
across wrist;
soothed
with hardened
peanut butter
diet caffeine
in a cooler
where
mutant ice cubes
swish
to wiper rhythms.

Kitchener bound
yet
still lost
over horizon;
up another rise
then down
this endless
stone beast.
six cylinders
strain to
relax a little
their oily excitement
well contained
on sighting
Toronto.

I love this Chris. I've always thought of Toronto as the 'Big Apple' of Canada. I've been there many times while I lived in Detroit. It was only a 4 hour drive.

One of the great Canadian cities, and one I've been to. I enjoyed "downtown" and the waterfront. I was there to attend an experimental aircraft trade show in beautiful Mississauga-a destination if there every was one. Nice write. Thanks.

Well, it's never been above a film crew on the cheap to have Toronto stand-in for New York. Either way, I loved the sparse, fast-paced tone of this little journey.

Thanks for the lovely tour of your ride on Highway 401. I'm jealous- this piece is great ...and you can drive!

I wish I could capture a still frame half as well as this.
