RIP 832F

by Traci Mabats

Sister wolf,
Alpha of her pack
runs free
among the cruel traps and snares
set to catch her
and break her spirit
kill her offspring
by taking their mother
A strong matriarch
not recognized
not respected
not in this state
(where feminism is still decades
behind the rest of the nation)
Run down by the men
who hate her
independence and wisdom
Her cries are ignored
Her People
weep in vain
also unheard
She is not so different than us, girls
those who walk on the wild side
those who cherish their voices
who are beaten when standing
their ground, for their simple grace
threatened some man
Next time you are hit,
shit on, or disrespected
remember your sister
and her bravery

Author's Note: 12 wolves from Yellowstone National Park have been killed by hunters. The alpha female 832F of the Lamar packs was among them. They are being targeted by hunters who are angry at the tourists who go to the park to view the wolves. this is being done to hurt them, people who are enjoying the park as they have every right to. Montana has a wolf population of a little more than 600. The current wolf hunt for Montana puts the harvest goals at 377. They have also allowed trapping.

In Alberta right now they are considering doing an intentional wolf hunt program to save the endangered caribou population. Circle of life - add humans to the mix and it gets all screwy.

Good poem...thanks for letting us know about this. Although I'm not an eco-nut, I do love animals, and hate when things like this happen.
