Go Back

by George Hoerner

it is time to go back
back to the caves
to the time when
comfort was a warm
stick fire in winter

back to a time long before
the time of our known ancestors
back to a time when we knew
what killing was and was
to be done

killing with no weapon
but the hands at
the ends of our arms
face to face be it beast
or foe who tried to kill us

back to a time when
we knew killing because
we felt in our hands
as something that need
be done to eat or live

not killing from some stick
that fires bullets and has
no feeling or fear
but where our very life
is put on the line

instead of some stage
or screen on a stand
where the more we see
the less we feel and
if not we just turn it off

A nicely-written, poetic shot of optimism.

I truly hope we move forward, though this is a finely crafted body of work.

This is quite a powerful and true statement. We really don't feel as deeply as death and killing as we did perhaps, in the old days. Probably because we care less about each other and therefore, can't see it as important when one of us dies. But your poem is a great, concise piece of work on the subject.

George I would love to habit a place and a time and a world as genuine as this poem. Alas, like that proverbial stick, we are stuck in this muddy one for the duration.

Yes.
