Missing

by George Hoerner

when i’m gone
no longer here
i will miss your voice
the music of spring
and all the seasons

though things will
be the same
they will change
as they do each day
now and in the future

i will miss
the same things
i do today
the friends i’ve lost
along the way

the same complaints
i have every day
where did this or that go
those pills i take or don’t
depending upon my memory

those lost thoughts
and things i would have said
had i not lost the chance
by not taking it
as they came past and said

time slips away

Time is a monster like that. Well done, sir.

"the friends i’ve lost along the way" This phrase punches me in the gut, fellow old-timer. There ain't many, hardly any, left. No close relatives of my generation; only two friends of long-standing, many miles away. The memories keep invading and I am trying to treat them all as dreams... I need to write a poem about it, but not now.

tis a fact. in life we scramble far and wide to accumulate much along the way, things which flow and things which go counter to the grain. and given life is oft an Indian giver, it tends to steal away with those things when we are least prepared to and yet I feel there is one thing life cannot take away from you, George, which is this persistent ability of yours to utter the truth and nothing but the truth so help you Muse.
