With And Without Her

by Chris Sorrenti

I am tranquility and peace
once more whole
home alone and loving it
the proverbial pin drop
no one crowding into my head
with a hundred little annoyances
distractions by the truckload
the word ‘neurosis’ redefined

of clean dishes still dirty
finally properly washed and rinsed
the elephant in the home
stomping at all hours of the day
insomniac nights
eccentric war woops and primal screams
a spiritual vampire put to rest

in a hole in the wall townhouse
turned room by room into
art studio
and though I enjoyed it at times
with loud dancing music
barbeques and
copious amounts of wine
I gave up on trying to kill the clutter
about half way through the field trip
that lived in look
as some would say
perhaps too lived in
in a different sense
borderline crazy
but not dangerous
departed for parts unknown

the hurricane has finally cleared
time to write a poem
or volumes if need be
as it used to be in the beginning
without having to make an appointment
with my own computer

in hindsight
there was no way around it
we had to roller coaster through ‘us’
to get to ‘here’
the journey
largely a pleasant one
of support and growth
learning what to look for
not to do next time
and though still short
in some regards
I am rich in others
and sometimes
that’s all it takes

perhaps it’s time
to share that wealth
with someone new
but not too soon please
not too soon

Lol. This just speaks to me. And the poignancy of the last stanza.... Nice, Chris.

I hear that soul mates serve just that sort of purpose...to shake us up and press all the buttons that must be pressed for growth. It can be a somewhat abrasive method, but one well loved in the long haul of it. I love how you always sort through your experiences, removing the negative so the rest are gems and treasure.

On second thought, maybe I should have said, "It can be a somewhat abrasive method, but one well APPRECIATED in the long haul of it." Heheh.

This is wonderful, Chris, and not too soon, but soon enough. It'll happen in it's own time.

What you can capture in what seems like the blink of an eye is generally more profound than what a lot of people get out of keeping their eyes wide open all night. Outstanding.

Getting back to square one can bring a familiar freshness. I quote Aristotle, "Whosoever is delighted in solitude is either a wild beast or a god". Yet, what you are getting at so poetically and accurate, is that sometimes we find no companion so "companionable" as solitude, and that may be enough for a number of cycles---as a touchstone we continually lose and find again. Wonderful write. Thanks.
