Testing by Leonard M HawkesIts more than just a trick of the mind,
These voyages at the turn of a thought,
Why? Where? How? When? Sometimes even who--
But the clarity hardly seems random--
Star Valley, winter, at the north end near the elk;
The Gray's River up ahead on the right;
Squinting in the mist and snow of the morning;
A shrunken frozen Palisades across the highway to the left--
The May wind shakes the tree beyond the window,
A girl coughs loudly in the classroom next door,
Papers shuffle, keyboards click, and
The clock's hands now seem to have stopped. 05/10/2012 Author's Note: 10 May 2012; 1:35 p.m.

| Posted by Kristina Woodhill on 05/12/12 at 03:36 AM I feel like I am inside a daydream, or wishful thinking as the last stanza brings me to where you actually are. Even the classroom scene is precise and easily felt. I appreciate the area you picture, Star Valley, the frozen Palisades - beautiful areas at any season. You are most fortunate to be able to draw upon these experiences even as you go about the daily dozen of the classroom. The "clarity" you speak of in the first stanza is a strong facet of your writing in general. |
