Lucifer Smiled

by James Zealy

She wrote him beautiful letters
Filled with innocence of
Of one who was blinded
By her emotion

He answered her letters
With soliloquies of pretense
That were more for himself
And his self same satisfaction

Letters splashed in Gothic prose
Singing songs of despair
That whisper love notes
For a dimensional reality
Not of his making

Answered in barren phrases
of a darkness writhing
Deeply in his heart
where lucifer snarled
With a ferocity of self loathing

Darkness feasted
Upon his self absorption
Leaving him well prepared
To lose what was left
Of his mortality

While she was left
Wondering for ever more
