I Want To Be An Artist

by Chris Sorrenti

I want to be an artist
Let my hair grown long and shaggy
Walk down the street
Without any clothes
And jump on top of cars

People may think I’m crazy
But I don’t really care
I’ll charge them fifty thousand dollars
For a piece of junk
I put up in their town square

I want to be an artist
A star of radio and TV
And if somebody dares to criticize
I’ll just stick out my tongue
You’ll find me up at four in the morning
Painting funny lines on my walls

I want to be an artist
Until the day I die
Making love
To a steady stream of groupies
It’s the only way I know how to get by

I want to be an artist
The essence of popularity
I throw wild parties
And invite politicians
They tell me I have their vote

Who knows?
Maybe someday I’ll grow up
Get tired of this artist thing
But for now
I’m just having a ball
Doing what I damn well please

Author's Note: Poking a little fun at the stereotypical eccentric artist. Salvador Dali immediately comes to mind, but I do love his work.

Going back a few hundred years there were few artists who were wealthy, although some were. Rembrant was and then lost it all. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries most that we now consider 'great' were poor and never saw their painting's value really rise. I suppose some on this site are eccentric in one way or another. But then I doubt one has to be creative to be eccentric.

The tragic comedy of those who create for attention, and not for art itself. They revel in the glory, not the quality of their creation.

Just perfect, Chris....and it reminds me of those $#%@inson lines, "fame is a bee, it has a song, it has a sting,ah, too, it has wings"...!!! Thanks for this. Delighted!
