As Casual Observer of Life

by Joe Cramer

I, the casual observer of life
sit silently, watching crowds pass by
going everywhere, ending nowhere.
A group sat near me
in a fast-food restaurant
looking so very lost and alone.

they appeared moderately elegant
and so very astute, intelligent
as they silently, yet quickly devoured
their fast-food, fancy lunch.

I sat silently.

It appeared that they french fries
held the most fascination
while they munched, diligently.
Refugees from some "home"
out and about, on their own?

As I ever so casually observed them
I wonder how I might have appeared
clad in sweaty "trucker garb,"
ball cap perched so jauntily on my head.

I wondered what would be said
as I sat so serenly silent.

The restaurant swelled for lunch,
and it was time for me to leave
and go about in my casual life
leaving with just the memories
and more succinct words crowded on a page.

As another casual observer of life I really enjoyed this. I used to love to sit on a bench or just stand and watch people rush in NYC or any other large or small city for that matter.

This is great. I love to sit and watch people, make up stories about their lives. They are strangers, so my mind wanders. Someone once walked up to me and said "you look haunted". I just smiled. How did she know? I think we're all observers of life.

I agree with George and Joan, if you can't be moved by this, then you're not human. I can sooo relate to that first stanza especially, at fast food restaurants, and on the busses (we don't have a subway here). The rest is icing on the cake.

I love this Joe, I am so glad it was poem of the day as I had previously missed this gem. One of my favourites of yours so far.
