But all the while, I know

by Lori Blair

When I see those on the streets in need
with nothing more than their hopes and coats
I shiver inside, from the inside out
without a doubt
I can't do enough for them alone
but then my heart goes out to those homing birds too
that search our mother earth
for all it's worth

and yet they still feed
on stale bird seed that I placed so neatly
three years ago

without a doubt

and,

it isn't enough for all that are in need, though,
through colder winter months
as the earth bares down her furbish coat

covering all gems and seeds
though some still believe
in a hope, within a hope

and now I see those out in the cold
hovering for warmth they won't recieve
they shiver inside, from the inside, then out
without a doubt
we don't do enough for them, alone
and then, again, my heart goes out for the children
who only wish an end
through all it's worth

they don't wish for christmas presents
or promises that can't be met

they just wish to find a home
through cold winter months
as the earth wears down her coat

they just wish to befriend a friend
till there is an end in sight

from all the cold
and hunger
in which they now live
from where they've been

and then also,

for,

someone who cares and doesn't stare
and though I've seen them with my own eyes
I have only enough to feed the birds
but I shiver inside, and then out, at the thought
so I choose to provide my best to those without
instead, without any regrets
and then, again, I see those birds
eating that stale food I placed
so long ago, before I knew

the earth will cover all her gems
just as she sleeps away
all there is to hope

but there are still some that can help them all
as either friends
or as Santa Claus

there really is still much hope to hope!

but all the while, I know,

cuz I don't have enough to feed the birds too
but someone else does

what else can we all do now?

cuz we buried all our forgotten seeds
so all those without could eat

until the end!

Unending within our means!

A very touching poem from a heart that reaches out to all, and to the birds. These are hard times for all and so even harder for the homeless when so few have a little extra to give. And I know I am only a step away from living out there with them. Sometimes what is in our hearts isn't enough and what is in our wallets isn't enough for us. If we can, we must do what we can. A deeply heartfelt poem of awareness.

When the middle class becomes the lower class and the lower class disappears from site we have a problem. I remember "Goldberg" who felt people should pull themselves by the boot straps and now some have not boots let alone the straps. A poignant write lady and one we should all remember and do what we can to help those who can't help themselves from the birds to the bees to those who slip through the cracks that are supposed to help the poorest.

I cannot help but think that no matter how many generations of snowflakes fell on this gem, it could not conceal it from my soul to which it is seed to plant and sparkle in a night's duskiest mood. Surely, what you have seeded here, Lori is Food for the soul which has had scant to eat these days.
