the fish scales shone smoke signals in the dense air
visible streams of gossamer fabric flashing and
twitching their warning
alarm tension swift streams of blood
they were going to eat the dodo's heart on a platter
he lay tied to stakes in the ground breast
rising and falling in rapid time
plucked where surgery was to take place goose
pimples trying to defend the surface
intelligent eyes wide and rolling beak
clicking like teeth grinding
it was a child's heart they wanted for that
was what lay inside
the mouselion heart of johnny boy doe
