Which me?

by Glenn Currier

It is the last shadowy arc.
The subtle journey
into the elusive corners
of my sleep.
Just before that precipitous junction
of dreams and day.

The black caterpillar,
vague with dread,
crawls up toward the dim light
of my eyelids.

And then
like the crack of a walnut
my eyes open
with swift affirmation.
I am back
to the familiar buildings
of consciousness.

The question
visited upon me
in its steadfast dailiness:
Which me will I step into?
The dark worm trailing the slimy past?
Or the butterfly looking for sweetness?

My first free choice of the new day.

Affirmative!!! I see the choices, but in my experience, so many more besides the caterpillar vs. butterfly. Which me today??? The one who has already successfully launched 4 novels? The one who has managed to keep herself healthy? Which successful version of me do I want to integrate with? LOVED this, and I think you write of the things all of us are experiencing on one level or another. Thank you Glenn :)

...we all wear changing suits; you have always been the butterfly to me. i watched you love fellowman for 40 years, you are the butterfly.
