A Star if Born
by Craig AllenRadio and television waves
emanating from Earth in the year
of my birth have now reached
Delta Leonis in the constellation Leo.
News of my birth has traveled
17.69 parsecs, following close
on the heels of the premiere of
the Today Show.
Dave Garroway and I blithely traverse
the space surrounding this main
sequence star that is slightly larger
and hotter than our own Sun.
But Dave has pulled out two pairs
of very nice Rayban sunglasses.
Or perhaps they are Delta Leonis
glasses. That would be fitting.
Bespeckled against the glare
We look around at the planets
laid out in concentric rings like our
own solar system and chat about
where exactly the life belt is, given
the differences in temperature,
mass and gravity of this star
compared to our own. We wonder
what sort of life might exist
on whatever planet lies therein,
and whether it is sentient enough
to have received our transmissions.
If so, I'm sure they're big fans
of Dave's, though I, being just
a newborn infant, have many
more parsecs to go before my fame
reaches these beings. One day
perhaps in their dotage they will
hear broadcasts of my poetry
and say, we knew him when.
