The Fine Art of Ignoring Pain

by Tim D Livingston

The fine art of ignoring pain
requires such effort!
Such imagination.
Years of perfecting and considering all routes to escapism.
So-called recreational, mind altering behaviors
to alter that uncomfortable something
that lurks like a beast beneath.
Then it's time to take flight
into a poisonous oblivion.
So many options,
For wide is the road to stagnation.

For some odd reason I chose the opposite way;
A daring journey and a long, drawn-out fight for personal healing.
I started years ago when the beast
took a strangle hold,
reaching it's death grip through a hole in my soul.
No armor, no weapons, no sense of what awaits,
I took off running towards the thing.
I wanted to know it's name, and so I became,
a coward who is searching out the source of his pain.

I can not call this cowardice to face is squarely. This is a unique process you have. Although I did listen to an author being interviewed last week who had written about her brother dying from AIDS way back when. He was bed ridden and told her one could experience pain without considering it suffering. I do not think I am that brave.

"face it", I meant to say.
