What we found

by Emily Tong

I found you looking at photo albums
it’s different here now I think watching
watching your dad pace around the kitchen table
and turn up the volume
the dishes drying on the counter still
have remnants of last night’s dinner;
Palmolive doesn’t smell the way it used to
and here you are looking at pictures

the shadow of a bird still
hangs in the window though
the rope to the tire swing has broken

our little rocking chairs sit in their places
in the attic where I once was a princess
and you the mother of a princess
