flight and the dilemma of parenthood

by Maria Francesca

1) I can fly,
she assures me,
all confidence
as she stands on the edge of the cliff
and prepares to fling herself off.

2) No, you can't,
I tell her emphatically,
so get away from that edge.

2a) You don't believe in me,
she wails, running away from the edge
and me
and never risking anything
ever again.

2b) I can so,
she shouts defiantly
and flings herself
to her death

2c) I can so,
she proclaims
and soars off the cliff
and into the sky.

3) Of course you can,
I tell her enthusiastically -
You can do anything you want!

3a) She believes this
and flings herself
to her death.

3b) She believes this
and soars off the cliff
and into the sky.

3c) She doesn't really believe this
and no longer trusts me
to tell her the hard truths.

4) No,
I tell her calmly;
You can't fly -
but you can climb.

The truth is probably the toughest lesson we learn in life isn't it! I only know because I still deny it. Very nicely done m'lady.

ha, parenthood is such a catch 22 at times, we want them to believe almost anything is possible but we want to prepare them for the hard truths of reality, which kind of contradict. Well done!

...a well-done mosaic of the 'dilemas'...loved the hardness of words that shook some softness.
