Turnpike Lane

by Robbi Skaera

I knew a girl, blonde hair, blue eyes
and barely five feet tall,
I sent up a smoke signal,
and she answered the call,
we wandered round the market
once we'd proven who we were,
and we sat down by the Shisha bar,
I couldn't take my eyes off her.

she lied right to my face, and she never did explain
why the only truth she told was that her stop was Turnpike Lane

She used to come and visit,
though she rarely stayed out late
but we'd stay in touch throughout the day
I assumed it must be fate,
I begged Mary to pray for us,
while I thought my face was hidden,
Divine intervention was too much to ask,
she knew something I didn't.

she lied right to my face, and she never did explain
why the only truth she told was that her stop was Turnpike Lane

She found a rat in her garden,
so she sang the corpse a song,
and Mohammed from the Net Cafe
asked what planet she was on,
she argued with the neighbour,
from her pink and purple throne,
then her best friend told me something
that I didn't want to know.

she lied about her age, she lied about her name
the only thing i think i know is her stop was Turnpike Lane
she lied about her age, she lied about her name
the only thing i think i know is her stop was Turnpike Lane.

Congrats on POTD! This piece really moves, loved the refrain, and especially that "rat" stanza.
