Halloween and the Little Very Shy Piggy

by Mary Ellen Smith

There once was a piggy, at Halloween time that wore a brown bag on his head.
When asked why he did this, the little shy piggy in a very small voice just said,
“I’m a little shy piggy is all. You know, and Halloween just scares me.”

He was scared of the goblin, the ghost and the ghoul.
Scared of the Halloween party at school.
He didn’t like tricking, nor treating its true.
He was afraid of loud noises and kids who said “BOO!”

So that’s why he got a brown bag and cut holes for his eyes.
A hole for his ears, nose and mouth and disguised
All his fears in a bag, all his scary shy thoughts.
And I tell you my friend, of those thoughts he had lots.

Well, on his way to school on that day of the Halloween party
He walked really slow and made himself tardy.
When he walked into class with that bag on his head
The teacher asked why and the little piggy just said,
“I’m a little shy piggy is all. You know, and Halloween just scares me.”

The kids in their costumes just giggled and laughed.
One Frankenstein piggy yelled, “That piggy is daft!”
But the teacher was nice and the teacher was sweet
And she did something really that was very off beat.

She got a bag from the cupboard and what a surprise,
She cut holes for her ears, her nose, mouth and her eyes!
She taught school all that day with a bag on her head
And when the principal asked why, well then that’s when she said,
“I’m a little shy piggy is all. You know, and Halloween just scares me.”

So after they did all their math, their spelling and reading
It was time for the Halloween parade, who’d be leading?
Every year the best Halloween costume was picked
And the winner would lead all the treated and tricked.

Well the class chose the piggy in the funny brown bag
And the little shy piggy got to carry the class flag.
The teacher walked beside him the with her bag on her head
And when the other classes asked why, they both simply just said,
“We’re just shy little piggy’s is all. You know and Halloween just scares us.”

Then later that night when the doorbell was ringing and ringing
And small piggy voices up and down all the streets were heard singing,
“Trick or treat, trick or treat, please give us some candy!”
Something happened that night that was really quite dandy!

Every piggy in town had a bag on his or her head,
And suddenly the shy piggy didn’t feel all that dread.
All that dread and that fear slipped away and he giggled
And he giggled oh so hard that his piggy tail wiggled.

He went out with his friends with the bags on their heads,
And he got lots of candy and that’s when he said,
“Halloweens not that scary if you think on it twice.”
“If you have some good friends, some good friends who are nice.”

And from that day on he didn’t feel quite so fearful,
At Halloween time he didn’t get shy or get tearful.
You don’t have to get scared when you know piggy’s care
And it doesn’t quite matter what Halloween costume you wear.
